Eever needed to use that ability RIGHT NOW, but your mouse is busy targetting someone and you're unable to dislocate your thumb in order to reach the 9 button?
Well struggle no more! by following this easy to use and understand (really, even Sarah could do this!) guide you will no longer suffer from RSI while strafing around a target and mashing a low-cooldown ability on the other side of keyboard
I originally moved my keybindings over to this format in Aion after reading a guide someone had posted on the forums there, but it went on a bit. So i'm compressing it down a tad and simplifying things somewhat
So, everyone knows WASD are the best movement keys yeah? I mean this has been a solid base since the days of quake. Well, you're wrong! Using WASD only leaves you a couple of keys on the left hand side for abilities. Meaning you're little pinky finger doesn't get the work out it deserves (unless you're daz and the pinky comes out for a flex every time you drink from a cup - can't find that picture dammit).
So, what's the solution I hear you cry? Well, its ESDF, which while it doesn't roll off the tongue as easily as wasd, it opens up a few more keys on the left for easy access, as well as number 5 on the number row, which was a bit of a stretch when using wasd.
OK, so lets crack on with the bindings themselves, first off we have movement
E - Forwards! (also, bind Mouse 1+2 to move fwds as well)
D - Backwards
S - Strafe left
F - Strafe Right
When fighting, its generally better to use the mouse buttons for forwards movement and turning, letting you circle strafe easily as well as not worry about holding down e when mashing abilities)
And speaking of abilities...
we have 3 sets of 5 keys within easy reach of esdf
1 2 3 4 5
Q W R T A
Z X C V G
I mapped these to the first 5 slots on the each of the first 3 quickbars
"But that's only 15 abilities!" I hear you cry. "I use twice that number!" You shout
Never fear, for this is where the joy of a modifier key comes in. Personally, I use shift, my little finger sits quite comfortably on shift when using ESDF, other decent options are ALT and CTRL, depending on the shape/size of your hand (I find Ctrl slightly awkward and ALT Hellish)
So now we have another 3 sets of 5 Keys
S1 S2 S3 S4 S5
SQ SW SR ST SA
SZ SX SC SV SG
These promptly get mapped to buttons 6-10 on the first three action bars
Now its just deciding which abilities go where on the bars. The ones to fill up first are the ones with no modifiers, these are the quickest for you to use and so you want spells you use a lot with low cooldowns
On my sorc, I've used 1-5 for aoe rotation abilities and anything that gets spammed (i.e. shattered shadows when FM is up)
q-a is single target stuff and pit of shades (non-rotation, but used regularly)
z-g is my oh-shit buttons: detaunt, disarm, silence, snare
and the modifier keys are used for misc stuff,
S1 is easy to hit, so has my overpowered absorb shield pocket item
S4/5 are my buffs that I use every respawn and every time someone is ressed
pots are on the modifed Oh-shit button keys
Each of the first 3 action bars has 2 un-allocated buttons at the end of them, I mapped the ones on bar 1 to 6 and S6 and use these for mount and sprint respectively
the other 4 buttons, and action bar 4 are all unassigned, in here I've just stuck abilities that are rarely used and/or don't get used in combat, in a panic whatever, i.e. siege abilities, scroll, book of binding, liniments, random pocket items, standards etc...
When i moved over to this method from the standard WASD and 1 to = keybaord layout, it took me a week to be competant, now its second nature and I can't see me ever going back to the old school keyboard mappings. I'd just suggest giving it a try
